For our very first Twitter Follower Spotlight, we spoke with Kimberly Mattina, AKA The Tech Lady.
Tell us a bit about yourself 👋
I'm a Computer Science teacher and a Technology Integration Coach at the William Davies Middle School in Mays Landing, New Jersey. I'm also Google Certified Trainer and a Top Contributor in the Google for Education help forum. Lastly, I'm the owner of The Tech Lady, LLC - a computer repair and consulting business.
What's your favorite way to use Screencastify at school?
As a technology integration coach, I love using Screencastify to create short videos that model best practices on how to implement technology into the classroom. Afterwards, I upload them directly to my YouTube channel.
For example, here's a quick video I made demonstrating how to give feedback using emojis. Very simple, but saved me so much time!
Additionally, as a classroom teacher, I created "how to" videos for students that are related to my content area. For example, I created videos that modeled how to create, save, and share an EarSketch coding project, uploaded them to my YouTube playlist and inserted the links into a hyperdoc for the assignment.
What sort of results have you achieved using Screencastify?
I found that by using Screencastify, my audience can access the videos at their own pace, anytime, anywhere. Having the videos uploaded to my YouTube channel gives my audience a resource to reference prior to requesting my services. This allows me to be more available and focus on other needs of the staff, teachers and students.
Additionally, I've found teachers and students to be more independent and to look at the playlists prior to asking me questions during class or contacting me.
What do you like most about Screencastify?
I love having the option to create gifs, trimming the videos, and downloading them right to Google Drive!
Why should every teacher use Screencastify in their classroom?
Teachers should use Screencastify to provide a digital resource for their students. This tool also provides differentiated instruction and a self-paced learning environment. For example, if a student is struggling with a math concept, the student can refer to the YouTube playlist, and watch, pause, rewind, and replay the video as needed. By providing short videos and making them available on YouTube, it also allows teachers to flip their classroom very easily.
